At the November 2011 ECDP meeting, the Dems & Friends’ Framing Committee members
shared their progress in developing a program to assist members and candidates in better framing current policy issues.
It is hoped that this will provide tools and guidance for all of us and our candidates for the upcoming election to deliver a cohesive message.
The group was facilitated by D&F Chair Christine Walker, led by long-time framing advocate Seth Phillips, along with Theresa Abed and Dennis Fedewa.
The reports outlined the advantage the Right has had in portraying issues that have all too often drawn people to side with policies contrary
to their own best interests and that of the country. For decades, abundantly funded "Think Tanks" have worked to foster language that draws on fear
and divisiveness. Progressives are now realizing the power of using language that promotes the progressive agenda, makes no appologies for past success
and is aggressive in citing the consequences of following a radical right agenda. The report cited several examples but urged the effort be expanded
and the Eaton County Democratic Party engage with the Michigan Democratic Party to coordinate the effort on a statewide basis.
This is an ongoing project which we hope to expand over the coming months. Dennis Fedewa will serve as Chair. The Framing Committee will be meeting with the Director of
“Engage Michigan”, Jocelyn Benson, on January 17, 2012 for further direction and coordination.
